Our Journey to the Altar {Day 1}

31 Days to the altar

I never thought I would get married. {Let’s save the exploration of that topic for another day}

And I definitely never thought I would get married to someone I had known for less than a year.

BUT things don’t always go as planned.

Although we didn’t dare say anything for fear of scaring the other off, Laszlo and I both knew “this was it” after only 6 weeks of dating. {I never believed I would feel that way…until it happened} It was on our 3-month anniversary that Laszlo caught me by complete surprise when he presented me with a ring and asked me to be his wife.

…and that’s when it all began. {Did you know that once you get engaged, people expect you to have all your wedding plans figured out right away?}

Because I was not expecting to get married, I had no wedding plans. There was no wedding I had been dreaming of since I was a little girl, and definitely no wedding magazines tucked away under my bed. Sure, I had a few things on my wedding Pinboard {because who doesn’t}, but those were really just cute ideas I had come across, not something I had actually thought through. All of a sudden these ideas needed to become realities and I needed to make some very important decisions. {Did I mention I hate making decisions?}

Approximately 24 hours after I said “yes” {which happened immediately this time, unlike the first time he asked me to be his girlfriend}, Laszlo admitted that he had been so focused on getting the ring on my finger and worrying about what my response would be, that he hadn’t even thought about what would come next.

Neither of us knew what we were getting into, and I would guess that most first-time brides are in the same boat. The day you get married is supposed to be the “best day of your life,” but most of us have no one to guide us in the right direction and tell us what we need to do in order to get to the altar.

Our engagement was 93 days long, and although we won the award for the shortest engagement out of the Bachelorette Pad {by 2 days}, I have noticed during my time in Idaho that 3-5 months is not an uncommon length of time to spend planning a wedding.

93 ÷ 3 = 31

I hope that in the next 31 days I can provide some sort of assistance to those of you who are in this same stressful situation. I hope I can make you laugh, or maybe make you feel better because you know more than I did when I started this journey.

One of the things Laszlo and I talked about early on {and frequently when things got stressful} was WHY we had chosen a short engagement. I believe it was summed up perfectly in this quote that we chose to put on our programs: “When you find the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
