Babes of Berachah {Unforgettable Moments}

I will never forget…my summer with the Babes of Berachah

The Babes of Berachah

Somehow I ended up on the 2008 Summer Staff at Camp Berachah. I had always wanted to be a camp counselor, and it was the first of many times that I said, “Screw the expectations of the business school, I’ll do what I want!” But that’s an unforgettable story in and of itself, one that I don’t have time for today.

This story starts on the HUB Lawn at the UW, where I was sitting when I got the phone call asking if I would be interested in being a horse camp leader. I was quite shocked, since I had not applied for that position, and had absolutely no desire to be around horses. But they promised me that I wouldn’t have to scoop poop {yes, I did ask that question during the interview} or do anything with the horses, just hang out with the girls, so I agreed.

I arrived at Red Barn, the dorm that would house the staff for the summer, not knowing what to expect for the two months ahead.  I was relieved to find a friend who quickly took to my side. She had already been there for a few days completing lifeguard training, and said she noticed me right away because I was the only one who didn’t have “Crazy Eyes.” We bonded rather quickly, and ended up convincing our roommates that they would have more fun if they roomed together, which meant we could be roommates, and do important things like rebel by watching Boy Meets World on her laptop.

We found a few other girls who didn’t have crazy eyes, and we referred to our pack as the “Babes of Berachah.” We endured a lot of drama that summer, but it was my first venture into intentional Christian community, and I loved it. {I could have done without the kids and the horses, but the friendships were great!}

There were people of all different backgrounds on staff, and through our time together I learned a lot about the church, a lot about myself, and a lot about my baby faith. At one of the summer chapels I looked around and thought “I could do this forever. I should do this forever.” I’m not exactly sure what the “this” was referring to….probably a little bit of the ministry and a little bit of the community, but mostly the active pursuit of Jesus.

I know for a fact that I would not have made it through that summer without the Babes of Berachah…I returned as the marketing intern summer 2010, and without those ladies, it was not nearly as much fun {although it was a completely different experience that worked on me in very important ways}. We are scattered across the country now, but I will never forget our wonderful times together, and the bond that we shared at such a crucial time in my journey.
